To be a social person - why I don’t use social media as much as some years ago

Well, it isn’t news that I don’t expose myself as much as I did before on the internet. During the pandemic, it wasn’t that much difficult to be on Instagram or other websites. Nowadays, it has become worse and worse, my desire for social media time has shrunk so much that I don’t like even scrolling through some of them.

Internet culture
This might be repetitive, but the fact that almost every platform became a living shopping centre or a bunch of cold genocidal people fighting just made online presence difficult altogether. Before there were spaces for us to interact with others, have a good time out of reality, share experiences with those similar to us and everything that made us less…shitty. The disappearance of space for kids online is a symptom of this and the lack of platforms without the presence of companies is another.

Behaviour
I don’t talk about it a lot, but I was in k-pop spaces online and it became way more toxic than before. The parassocial relationship and competitive attitude on a lot of fandoms made the public near-sighted and dependent on their interactions with idols and to make them try to seem superior than the others. Not even talking about hypocrites that try to paint others as probematic while brushing their faves’ problematic actions.
When it comes to general observation, it was clear that people became way more aggressive and have more problems with literacy and text interpretation. There are moments where people ask genuine questions and people assume they are being passive aggressive when that isn’t the case a lot of times. The world isn’t trying to see you fall, it can be just them inquiring things.
The previous point might be due to the pandemic when our lives became strictly online at a down low moment in society, but that doesn’t mean they can be mean to each other. We have to understand how to treat others and this is lacking on the internet.

Lack of attention
Due to the growing trend of vertical videos with less than 2 minutes of duration, it was clear that people stopped consuming media mindfully or to learn things deeply. It might have a connection with growing trends of consuming fast fashion and fake news, but it’s so clear that people just consume information rapidly and don’t really think about them, not even if they’re true. Plus, maybe it’s one of the constant habits that makes people angrier, overwhelmed, but they don’t quit because it’s everywhere. I know because I was one of those people.

Everything is cringe
That one is more predominant in younger fellas – teens and early 20s adults – but it’s so detrimental how molding themselves around what is getting hyped at the moment is and I’m saying it as somebody who is far from the norm. The lack of individuality is a big thing nowadays plus it isn’t about liking popular things, it’s about only liking things because they are popular.
When the moves are all about what is popular, the shape won’t differ from a horse getting guided by a person. Just like beauty standards, they change to eat more of your money.

Out of there, what did I do?
Since I decided to not interact a lot on social media, I decided to prioritize my hobbies.
One of the most recent is crochet. I have been making a lot of pieces and maybe I might post them here in the future.
Came back with my game dev projects with full force. Last year was rough, but it made me rethink my career and for sure it’s a big part of my life at the moment. Plus, for the first time in years, I’m happy with what I’m doing. The satisfaction by crafting what I love is unbelievable.
In a more introspective view, I have been reflecting on my priorities nowadays. In recent years, I have been stressing over little things that didn’t really affect my life right now except for making me anxious. Even if life has a lot of ups and downs, I prefer to not get overwhelmed by those things. With this in mind, social media became optional, I have been online solely for my friendships that send me things for giggles or news.
